Red Flags of Executive Functioning Difficulties
3 or more checks total suggest your child may
benefit from Executive Functioning intervention.
General Red Flags
Rigid thinking- has difficulty moving beyond the more basic ways of doing things
Has difficulty taking on new tasks and responsibilities
Poor focus/attention- difficulty staying on the task until it is completed
Poor organizational skills- has difficulty organizing their thoughts, choosing the words for the sentences, adding supporting details while keeping track of the main idea
Poor short-term memory- has difficulty recalling the steps needed to complete a multiple stepped task and following multi-stepped directions
Difficulty understanding idioms (such as "keep your ear to the ground") and puns (such as "the joke")
Academic Red Flags
Difficulty solving word problems
Difficulty understanding how words can be used in more than one way (such as "don't slip on the banana peel" and "sign the permission slip"
Difficulty understanding how the same letter combination can make different sounds
(such as -ough in words like enough and dough)
Difficulty understanding what information is important and what details are just used to add to a description
Difficulty understanding the perspectives of different characters in a story
Poor self-monitoring skills- does not check for grammar and spelling mistakes, poor use of grammar rules and variations of the rule (-ed is past tense, but the past tense of go is went)
