Fine Motor
What is Fine Motor?
Fine motor is using the small movements of our hands, fingers and wrists to do activities.
Functional fine motor skills require stable hand arches, wrist stability, hand separation, shoulder girdle stability and endurance to allow for the hand movements to be precise enough to accurately do a task and have enough endurance to complete the task.
Why do Fine Motor Skills Matter?
Fine motor skills are needed for finger dexterity, writing, cutting, holding utensils, buttoning/zipping clothing, opening containers, beading, and keyboarding.
The Cameron et al. scientific study found "kindergartners with higher fine motor composite scores achieved at higher levels on the fall [academic] outcomes", especially in "decoding, reading comprehension and overall reading". The study also found the design-copy fine motor skill significantly predicted "gains in phonological awareness and marginally predicts mathematics".
